How to Weld Plastic with Hot Air
Hot air plastic welding is widely used in industrial applications such as plastic tanks, HDPE piping, sheet lining, and plastic component repair. When performed correctly, it produces strong, clean, and reliable weld seams.

This guide walks through the essential steps—from preparation to finishing.

Step 1: Surface Preparation
1.1 Set Up a Well-Ventilated Workspace
Work in an area with good airflow or proper fume extraction to remove vapors generated during heating.

Improves safety and working conditions.

1.2 Wear Heat-Resistant Protective Gear
Recommended PPE:

Protective workwear
Heat-resistant gloves
Safety shoes

Prevents burns and heat exposure injuries.

1.3 Clean the Plastic Surface
Use a sponge and clean water to remove dirt, grease, and dust.

Important:
The surface must be clean and completely dry before welding.

1.4 Match the Welding Rod to the Base Material

PE → use PE rod
PP → use PP rod
PVC → use PVC rod

1.5 Test the Welding Rod (if test kit available)

1.7 Align and Clamp the Plastic Parts

PP / PU ≈ 300°C
PVC ≈ 275°C
PE ≈ 265°C

2.2 Perform Tack Welding

To secure alignment before the final weld pass.


2.3 Trim the Welding Rod Tip
Cut the rod tip at a slight angle.

Helps achieve a smoother weld start.


2.4 Install the Speed Welding Nozzle
Attach the speed welding nozzle so hot air and rod feed together.

Best for:

Long seams
Sheet welding
High-efficiency work

2.5 Perform Speed Welding
Move the nozzle steadily along the joint.

Key techniques:

Maintain constant travel speed
Keep nozzle angle around 45°
Ensure proper melting (not burning)

2.6 Use Pendulum Welding (When Required)
For certain joints, a pendulum motion helps distribute heat more evenly.


Step 3: Post-Weld Finishing
3.1 Allow the Plastic to Cool
Let the weld cool naturally for about 5 minutes or until fully solidified.

⚠️ Do not quench with water — this can cause brittleness.


3.2 Sand with Coarse Grit (#120)
Remove excess weld bead and level the surface.


3.3 Finish Sanding (#180–320)
Smooth the surface for a clean, professional finish.
